Year Four

Hello and welcome to Year 4

Spring 2026

Year 4 have had a fantastic start to the spring term!

In English, we have been reading The Lost Thing. We started by writing the story using the events in the book. It was then our turn to become authors and write our own story! We created our own ‘Lost Thing’ character, and changed the journey it went on. We are all very proud of our writing, and worked really hard on our stories!

In maths, we have been learning new topics, such as decimal numbers, thinking about partitioning, addition and subtraction. Also, we have been working hard on our times tables! Each week we are looking at new times table facts. We have become experts in squared numbers!

This half term our art topic has been focused on landscapes. We looked at a variety of different landscape artists, and created our own pieces of art inspired by them. Our first piece of landscape art was based on the work of Leonid Afremov, we used his sunset paintings to create our own ones. After that, we looked at the work of Emily Carr, and using oil pastels recreated half of her painting. We also looked at Lowry and his examples of urban landscapes.

In Science, we have been learning all about solids, liquids and gases! We learnt about what happens when solids and liquids mix together. We also conducted an investigation about melting, seeing how quickly and at what temperature butter, jelly and chocolate melt!

Weather and climate has been our topic in geography. To start with, we looked at the different types of weather and how they affect people’s lives. We then moved on to look at the difference between weather and climate, and looked at the different climate zones and where they are located. We even learnt about why we have seasons and day and night! Additionally, we looked at the different weather instruments and in pairs made rain gauges to put outside the track the amount of rainfall.

Autumn 2025

We have had a fantastic autumn term in year 4! In English, we have been reading Robin Hood. We learnt about the different characters and the setting. As our final piece, we wrote our own Robin Hood stories. We included lots of different writing features in our stories, such as expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials and speech. We also created our own wanted posters for Robin Hood!

In maths, we started the term learning all about place value. We then used our place value knowledge to revise column addition and subtraction. In the second half of the term we have been working hard learning all about our multiplication facts, to learn our times tables!

We have all been resilient tortoises and creative chameleons in art this term! We have been learning all about weaving. We started our topic learning about the history of weaving and where it came from. After this, we practised paper weaving, getting used to using the in and out movement. Finally, we made our own loom and weaved with ribbon and wool!

In Science, our topic has been Living Things and their Habitats. We took our learning onto the playground and learnt about categorising ourselves based on identifiable features. We also went on a mini beast hunt to learn about different habitats and whether certain animals and vertebrates or invertebrates. At the end of the topic, we focused on endangered animals. We each made a detailed fact file about a chosen animal, explaining why they are endangered and what we can do to help.

Summer 2025

We have had lots of fun in Year 4 over the summer term.

In English, we read ‘Escape from Pompeii’. We really enjoyed learning all about Mount Vesuvius and what happened to Pompeii. We wrote brilliant setting descriptions using the book for inspiration. Additionally, we also thought about what Pompeii is like today. We each made our own travel brochures, using persuasive language to encourage people to come and visit!

Our Science topic for the second half of the term has been sound. We have been thinking about what sound is, how it is produced and how it travels. We conducted an experiment trying to make the best string phones! We worked in pairs and made string phones using different lengths of string to test how the volume of the sound changed. We loved making these and trying them out.

We have been working hard in maths. We all completed our multiplication checks and were fantastic resilient tortoises. Additionally, we have been learning about coordinates, how to find them and we have drawn our own ones!

In history, we have been learning about Roman Britain. We have been learning all about what life was like for the Romans in Britain. We have researched inventions the Romans brought to Britain such as roads. Also, we each designed our own Roman villa.

In art, we created our own puppet theatres based around the theme of dreams. First, we had to come up with a story for our puppet theatre and think of the design. Then, we had to make our theatres! We used lots of different materials, and also added 3D features! We then had the opportunity to perform them for reception, which we really enjoyed.

In DT, we have been learning all about seasonality. We have been thinking about which fruits and vegetables are in season, and why eating seasonal food is important. Using our knowledge of seasonal fruit, we each made our own fruit tarts. As well as thinking about the fruit we used, we also had to think about our presentation.
